An Unforgettable Journey
Julie Mulhern's basketball journey began in her hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Growing up in a family with a strong athletic tradition, she discovered her passion for the game at a young age. With her exceptional talent and relentless determination, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most dominant players in the country.
In 1985, Mulhern made history by joining the legendary Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's basketball team. Under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw, she became a cornerstone of the program's success. With her exceptional ball-handling skills, court vision, and unwavering leadership, she led the team to two NCAA Championships (1993 and 2001) and four Big East Conference titles.
Throughout her collegiate career, Mulhern garnered numerous accolades, including three All-American selections, four All-Big East honors, and the 1993 Honda Sports Award for Basketball. She holds the all-time Notre Dame records for assists (906) and steals (522).
Trailblazing the Path
Beyond her on-court accomplishments, Julie Mulhern played a pivotal role in paving the way for women's basketball. Her presence on the national stage helped change perceptions and inspire a generation of young girls to pursue their dreams in athletics.
In 1999, Mulhern became the first woman to serve as an assistant coach for a men's Division I basketball team (Duquesne University). Her pioneering efforts broke down barriers and demonstrated that women could excel in coaching roles traditionally reserved for men.
A Legacy of Leadership
After retiring from playing, Mulhern transitioned seamlessly into coaching. She spent eight seasons as the head coach of the University of San Diego women's basketball team, where she led the program to its first NCAA Tournament appearance and two West Coast Conference titles.
Throughout her coaching career, Mulhern has consistently been recognized for her leadership and mentorship skills. She has received multiple Coach of the Year awards and has been inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (2012) and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2019).
Impact Beyond the Court
Julie Mulhern's influence extends far beyond the basketball court. She is actively involved in promoting gender equality in sports and empowering young people to achieve their full potential. She serves on the board of directors for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and is a vocal advocate for Title IX.
Through her work with various organizations and initiatives, Mulhern continues to inspire and motivate others. She has established the Julie A. Mulhern Basketball Scholarship Fund at Notre Dame and the Mulhern Mentoring Program at the University of San Diego, which provides support and guidance to student-athletes.

Julie Mulhern's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, leadership, and the transformative impact of sports. As a player, coach, and trailblazer, she has left an indelible mark on the world of women's basketball and beyond. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
