Marcus Annaeus Lucanus: A Biographical Sketch
Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, known to posterity simply as Lucan, was born in Corduba (modern Cordoba, Spain) in 39 CE, the son of a wealthy Roman family. His father, Marcus Annaeus Mela, was a noted orator and writer, and his uncle, Seneca the Younger, was a renowned philosopher and statesman.
Lucan showed an early talent for poetry and was educated in Rome under the tutelage of the Stoic philosopher Cornutus. He gained the favor of the emperor Nero, who appointed him quaestor (a financial official) and later praetor (a judicial official).
In 60 CE, Lucan published his epic poem Pharsalia, which chronicled the Roman Civil War between Julius Caesar and Pompey. The poem was a critical and commercial success, and Lucan was hailed as one of the greatest poets of his generation.
However, Lucan's relationship with Nero soured after he recited a poem that was critical of the emperor. Nero accused Lucan of treason and ordered him to commit suicide. Lucan complied, opening his veins in 65 CE at the age of 26.
