A Ghostly Figure Standing On A Civil War Battlefield Southern Ghosts: Battlefields Boats Burial Grounds

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is one of the most haunted battlefields in the country. During the three-day battle that raged here in July 1863, over 51,000 soldiers were killed or wounded. Visitors to Gettysburg often report seeing the ghosts of soldiers walking the battlefield, hearing the sound of gunfire, and even smelling the gunpowder in the air.

Antietam, Maryland, is another notorious Civil War battlefield. In September 1862, over 26,000 soldiers were killed or wounded here. The battle was so bloody that the creek that runs through the battlefield turned red with blood. Today, visitors to Antietam often report seeing the ghosts of soldiers wandering the battlefield, searching for their fallen comrades.

Boats: Ghosts of the Sea

The waters of the American South are home to many ghostly legends. From the pirate ships that once sailed the Caribbean to the abandoned ships that now lie at the bottom of the Charleston Harbor, the sea is a place where the spirits of the dead are said to roam.

One of the most famous ghost ships in the American South is the Brigantine Lavinia. In 1799, the Lavinia was carrying a cargo of slaves from Africa to the Caribbean when it was caught in a hurricane and sank off the coast of South Carolina. All aboard the ship were lost, and their spirits are said to still haunt the waters around the wreck.

Another haunted ship is the USS Housatonic. During the Civil War, the Housatonic was sunk by the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley. The Hunley was the first successful submarine in history, but it was also the first submarine to sink an enemy ship. The Housatonic was raised from the bottom of the ocean in the 1960s, and it is now on display at the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Visitors to the museum often report seeing the ghosts of the sailors who died on the Housatonic.

Burial Grounds: Restless Spirits

The burial grounds of the American South are often said to be haunted by the spirits of the dead. These spirits are said to be restless, unable to move on to the afterlife because they have unfinished business on Earth.

One of the most haunted cemeteries in the American South is the Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. Bonaventure is the burial ground for many of Savannah's most prominent citizens, including the poet Conrad Aiken and the singer Johnny Mercer. Visitors to Bonaventure often report seeing the ghosts of the cemetery's residents, wandering among the tombstones and mourning their lost loved ones.

Another haunted cemetery is the St. Louis Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana. St. Louis is the burial ground for many of New Orleans' most famous residents, including the voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Visitors to St. Louis often report seeing the ghosts of the cemetery's residents, dancing and singing among the tombs.

The American South is a place where history and mystery intertwine. The battlefields, boats, and burial grounds of the region are said to be haunted by the ghosts of the past. These ghosts are a reminder of the turbulent history of the South, and they serve as a warning that the past is never truly gone.
